Welcome to the Serpent’s Tale, where I cover tips, tricks, and exciting things from within the TTRPG sphere!

Greetings!

Welcome everyone to the Serpent’s Tale! I will be covering exciting announcements from Voltaic Overdrive, tips & tricks, along with exciting development log updates for behind the scenes content before it hits prime time. Without further ado, let’s get into it!

Tips & Tricks

Do your players suck at rolling dice? I don’t mean at the game, I mean literally, at rolling dice. Is your paladin constantly rolling below 10 and never hits? Does your rogue always nail a natural one while everyone else stays stealthy? For players this is frustrating, especially if their build is good, but they’re just unlucky with rolls. When this happens I try to give them more feedback than just “miss” or “you fail.” Next time, try to describe how they “expertly navigated but they stepped on a broken step, and it alerted the guards,” or, “you expertly swung at the skeleton, but it clumsily stepped out of the way just in time.” In my experience, it keeps the players more engaged even if it didn’t work out.

Behind the Scenes – New Game? 👀

Between May and June of this year I decided I was going to create my very own tabletop RPG game! My goals were simple:

  1. Keep it lightweight (OSR/NSR inspired)
  2. Make it lethal
  3. Nail that 80’s dystopian future feel

Melding my love of 80’s sci-fi anime with the likes of 80’s R rated action flicks, the game follows mercenaries, corporate drones, ex cons, and hackers as they try to scrape by in the city of New Houston. Combat is quick and deadly (usually less than 5 rounds), characters and their bodies can be fully modified, and the game uses a unique dice pool/dice ladder hybrid system. Gone are the days of super swingy fights. The better you get, the higher your average roll goes up. The game is a riot to play, and can be deadly with the wrong moves. I’ll share more pieces as we get closer to the “beta” release, but I’m super excited to show it off to the world.
